Village Web Sites of the Year 2001
UK Villages Online is proud to present these awards to
the
best small community web sites across the UK
|
| With
Cambridgeshire seeming to have more villages on the web than any other
county, we must take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work
that has gone into all of these by awarding two awards to the county
of Cambridgeshire this month... |
|
Comberton is a super
local site with plenty of information making it an essential guide
for both locals and visitors alike. Well done Comberton - you have
a web site to be proud of! Nearby The Giddings (Great Gidding, Little Gidding, and Steeple Gidding) has an excellent
web site containing a wealth of useful information and a real community
feel.

Willington Village, Bedfordshire,
is a small but very ancient village, dating back well over 1,000
years to early Anglo Saxon Times. The village name is derived from
its location amongst willow trees on the banks of the River Great
Ouse. Willington is part of the Forest of Marston Vale. We very
much liked this web site! |

 |
Petrockstowe, Devon, centres
around St. Petroc's church, The Laurels inn, the chapel and village
hall. There is a strong community spirit
with many local clubs, societies and local events.
This site has a good selection of local input
and some excellent photographs, although the background music suddenly
blaring out almost lost Petrockstowe the award (if you're browsing
from work, or late at night, you have been warned!). What really
won us over was the good use of hyperlinks to other sections and
other sites, embedded in the context of the text instead of more
traditional plain lists. |

Rushden is a tiny village
of about 200 population located in North Hertfordshire. Many of
the properties
date back to the 16th century and there are a few ghosts that wander
around every so often. No shops
are left, but we still have a church and a pub, both of which are
at the centre of the community
This is a well maintained and popular village web site with strong
local support, and well deserving of this months award. |

Stonham Aspal is a village
in Suffolk in the eastern part of England.
This local community site is clean and clear
with plenty of new and historic photographs. The quality and range
of content on offer is a good example of what can be done with a
village website - well done! |

Denbury Village is situated
in South Devon, England, between Totnes and Newton Abbot, about
ten miles from Torquay. The village has beautiful views of Dartmoor
and is overlooked by Denbury Down, site of an ancient Celtic Hillfort.
About 300 households including outlying farms.
A friendly local site (we like these!) it
seems to have its own wonderful personality, and features some rather
interesting sections. For example, clicking on "the village"
on the main page presents a street plan - but this is no ordinary
map. Moving the mouse around you can discover clickable regions
which do something we've always fancied doing on our own villages
web site but never got around to it. Well done Denbury! |

 |
Harrietsham is a small
village situated to the East of Maidstone, and spanning the A20
Ashford Road. The backdrop to Harrietsham is the North Downs, along
which runs the Pilgrims Way, part of the pilgrimage route to Canterbury.
The village dates back to prehistoric times, with evidence of a
Roman settlement and a mention of the village and parish church
in the Doomesday Book.
What drew our attention to this excellent
local site was the "whats new" section and the success with involving
other local groups with the web site. The calender on the events
page was a very nice touch! Although the use of frames may be annoying
to some (and font sizes were a bit awkward on our Netscape browser),
the overall quality of the content won us over this month. |

 |
Llay is a small village
on the outskirts of Wrexham, North Wales. An old colliery village
with a lot of history. The village is surrounded by the countryside
and views of Hope Mountain can be seen from the village. Nearby
Wrexham is a great Town with a superb shopping centre. Chester is
also close by and is an old Roman town with a lot of places of intrest
to visit. |

 |
Quorn, or Quorndon, in
Leicestershire, is surrounded by farmland, and the river Soar snakes
through the southern end of the village. The Great Central railway
regularly runs steam trains through Quorn on the way to Leicester
or Loughborough.
This is an excellent example of a regularly
updated web site run by various members of the local community.
Clean and easy to navigate, the initial running costs are partially
subsidised by the local Parish Council and ongoing support by the
reselling of village e-mail addresses. |

Long Melford, Suffolk,
has been settled for many centuries. It can still be seen as a piece
of medieval strip-development from the great green below the church
for three miles southwards beside the river Stour.
Although frames based, care has also been
taken to support browsers that do not support frames. This is particularily
important for search engine listings! One of the larger villages
on our database, Roger Kistruck has done well to retain that village
atmosphere and presents a very good example of how to promote local
businesses without becoming over commercialised.
The site is supported by the Long Melford
Business Association, many of whose members advertise on the site
and help make it possible for charitable organisations to get their
space free. |
